They didn't give two shits about stuff like characterization and character motivations over player choices, but these are different things from immersion, which is "seeing yourself in situation". You can immerse yourself in the situation and role play yourself in the hypothetical without giving a shit about pretending to be someone else in your mind's eye
After playing WoW for the last four years, the game it most reminds me of... is Original D&D run by Gary Gygax..
We didn't know the rules, we found out how things worked by poking at them and seeing what happened, and we looked on our PCs mostly as puppets we moved around the game world exploring things.
The "looking over my character's right shoulder" POV of WoW perfectly matches that feeling
